When your family is murdered, and the home you had made together is destroyed, and you yourself are beaten and left for dead — as happened to Bill Petit on the morning of July 23, 2007 — it may as well be the end of the world. It is hard to see how a man survives the end of the world. The basics of life — waking up, walking, talking — become alien tasks, and almost impossibly heavy, as you are more dead than alive.
Just how does a man go about surviving such a thing? How does a man go on?
Oof. I’m not sure that I could.
Matt Groening’s limited edition Esquire UK cover. Not really a giant fan of the US Esquire but the UK one’s art direction is pretty amazing.
Today was awful, and I only have myself to blame for it. I let things that were completely beyond my control gnaw away at me and I was a little brat. So then I remember that I had this article saved and on the train ride home I read it, and I remembered. The world is generally OK. Ted Williams, one of the greatest hitters of all-time is OK. This essay from Esquire is excellent. It talks about Ted’s life, growing up with nothin’, gettin’ to the MAJORS, and basically being the 2nd king of Baseball (after Ruth, before Mantle).
It also talks a lot about fishing, and his wives and taking time off from the game to be a fighter pilot in WWII and Korea. I think you should read it. Especially if you’re having a bad day, and definitely since Spring Training has started and Baseball is pretty much the greatest sport ever.
Still one of my favorite limited Esquire UK covers. For reference, this was the regular cover that month. Limited edition art covers are a pretty great incentive to get your subscription numbers up, if you ask me.
